The CS1501 is a high-performance digital power factor correction (PFC) controller designed for switching mode power supply (SMPS) applications. The CS1501 actively manages the power factor correction while achieving high efficiency over a wide load range. The CS1501 adaptively controls the input AC current so that it is in phase with the AC mains voltage, and its waveform mimics the input voltage waveform. The PFC controller executes adaptive digital algorithms designed to shape the AC mains input current waveform to be in phase with the input voltage waveform. The CS1501 is equipped with a zero-current detection (ZCD) circuit providing the PFC digital controller the capability to turn on the MOSFET when the voltage across the drain and source is near zero. Additionally, a current-sensing circuit is incorporated for instantaneous overcurrent protection. The CDB1501-250W board demonstrates the performance of the CS1501 with input voltage range of 90-265 VAC, typically seen in universal input applications. This board has been designed for a Vlink of 400V, 250 Watts, full load. Extreme caution needs to be exercised while handling this board. This board is to be used by trained professionals only. Prior to applying AC power to the CDB1501-250W board, the CS1501 needs to be biased using an external 13 VDC power supply. This document provides the schematic for the board. It includes oscilloscope screen shots that indicate operating waveforms. Graphs are also provided that document the performance of the board in terms of Efficiency vs. Load, Total Harmonic Distortion vs. Load, and Power Factor vs. Load for the CS1501 PFC controller IC.
